15.02.2023A time of unprecedented danger: it is 90 seconds to midnight

This year, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moves the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward, largely (though not exclusively) because of the mounting dangers of the war in Ukraine. The Clock now stands at 90 seconds to midnight—the closest to global catastrophe it has ever been.

Founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein and University of Chicago scientists who helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists created the Doomsday Clock two years later, using the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero) to convey threats to humanity and the planet. The Doomsday Clock is set every year by the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board in consultation with its Board of Sponsors, which includes 10 Nobel laureates. The Clock has become a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to global catastrophe caused by manmade technologies.

Earth and Pillars

This is one of the few bands whose oeuvre is virtually free of missteps. Atmospheric Black Metal combines Ambient in a very successful way, just as I wish. I'd almost be inclined to say that this Italian formation, who released their first album, simply called Earth I, in 2014, is a more mature version of Wolves In The Throne Room. Atmospheric, musically dense and consistently well produced. Their albums, five in all, were all released by the Milan label Avantgarde Music. The members seem to keep a low profile, calling themselves just F, Z and I. Anyone who wants to drift off into a mystical world of nature with the help of their compositions, far away from the disgusting stench of mankind, will certainly not be disappointed by Earth and Pillars.

Menace Ruine – Umbra Horrenda [Official video]

from the release: Nekyia (04.11.2022)

Label: Union Finale

Country: Canada

Genre: Experimental

Originating from Montréal, Québec in Canada, Menace Ruine are a duo who play a powerful hybrid of avant-garde black metal, dark ambient, drone and martial neo-folk.

Formed in 2007, the band achieve their sound largely through the use of heavily manipulated and distorted effects and feedback, though one of their most distinctive elements is the sonorous vocals of Geneviève, reminiscent of a more melodious and doomy Nico. Their lyrics seem to centre largely on themes of occultism and the workings of fate.

'Cult of Ruins', their debut album, was a fierce black metal assault but was swiftly followed by 'The Die is Cast', which introduced more mellow strands of elegiac neo-folk into the maelstrom. This balance has been maintained and expanded through their subsequent recordings.

9T Antiope

There is a great experimental scene in Iran (especially in Tehran). Here's a part of it.

The “9T Antiope” duo consists of Paris-based, Iranian musicians Nima Aghiani and Sara Bigdeli Shamloo [aka SarrSew]. The main focus of the band is on experimental music, using layers of acoustic instruments, electronics and combining them with vocals and lyrics, in order to narrate tiny bits or huge landscapes of the chaotic worlds they envision, along with their inhabitants.

Since 2014, they’ve had releases on multiple labels such as PTP (Purple Tape Pedigree), Eilean Rec., Hallow Ground, Zabte Sote/Opal Tapes, Flaming Pines, Unperceived Records and an upcoming project on American Dreams. The duo also works in the different theatre, film and performance projects, for which they do sound design and composition.

04.12.2022Haruko - Homeless

Haruko – aka Susanne Stanglow – writes and sings songs that move between weird-folk, indie pop and lo-fi or experimental music. Now sold out their debut album released in 2009 on the American psychadelic-folk label „Bracken“. In her songs she tells little stories, fairy tales and fables that carry the listener to a place where dragons weep with heartache, cats dancing on rooftops and transform people into birds. Dream-like fantasies are mixed with feelings of sadness and longing.

At her concerts in the past two years she performed as a support for Tunng, Emily Jane White, and Moddi Richmond Fontaine.

Her other project is sea below, which she started much later (in 2020 with her only output so far called sleeplessness). It sounds altogether more serious and mature. Susanne's very tender, almost fragile voice gives these musical pearls their special sad beauty wrapped in a dark veil of unsatisfied yearning.

Sarah Davachi

Sarah Davachi (b. 1987, Canada) is a composer and performer whose work is concerned with the close intricacies of timbral and temporal space, utilizing extended durations and considered harmonic structures that emphasize gradual variations in texture, overtone complexity, psychoacoustic phenomena, and tuning and intonation.  Her compositions span both solo and chamber ensemble formats, incorporating a wide range of acoustic and electronic instrumentation.  Similarly informed by minimalist and long-form tenets, early music concepts of intervallic and modal harmony, as well as experimental production practices of the electroacoustic studio environment, in her sound is an intimate and patient experience that lessens perceptions of the familiar and the distant.

Between 2007 and 2017, Davachi had the unique opportunity to work for the National Music Centre in Canada as an interpreter and content developer of their collection of acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments.  She has held artist residencies with The Banff Centre for the Arts, Composer's Kitchen, STEIM, Elektronmusikstudion, OBORO, the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, the National Music Centre, and the Swiss Museum & Center for Electronic Music Instruments, and holds a master's degree in electronic music and recording media from Mills College in Oakland, California.  Davachi is currently a doctoral candidate in musicology at UCLA, focusing on timbre, phenomenology, and critical organology, and is based in Los Angeles, California.
